Arc. Arts for Recovery in the Community

"Within a dedicated framework, which allows time for contemplation, the arts serve the function of externalising, intensifying and transforming life experiences and this results in improved cognitive, emotional and spiritual well-being as well as a greater sense of coherence and meaning in life.”

Ellen Dissanayake

Arc's Core Values

Our aim is to promote the well being of people who are experiencing emotional or psychological distress by encouraging creativity in the arts and participation in the development of the organisation.

At Arc, we affirm the self-worth of everyone in the Arc community. On that basis we strive collectively, to foster:

Commitment to the development of Arc and its philosophy

Acceptance of responsibility for Arc’s development

Proactive participation in Arc’s creative activities

Fruitful interaction between participants and facilitators

Creativity in a wide range of arts practices

High quality services and products, delivered by integrated teams

The widening of social choices available to participants

Fuller integration into the communities around us

Good models of practice, adaptable to other settings

Work, social and educational opportunities for participants

Positive images of people recovering from mental illness

We will strive to improve the well being of individuals, by building:

Tolerance and respect for other people

Increased self-esteem amongst all participants

Confidence and trust in oneself and others

The skills and creativities of all participants

Integrated pathways to recovery and well being

The right balance between self-interest and the interests of others

Increased individual independence

Supportive friendships within the community

In order to achieve these goals Arc works closely with each individual to agree the right package of support, encouragement and opportunities, liasing with many other agencies to explore pathways for individuals to employment, education and volunteering.
