Arc. Arts for Recovery in the Community

“I just thought I¹d drop you a note and let you know how I¹m getting on since I finished volunteering for you. I spent the summer temping and I¹ve just started a job as a mental health support worker for the charity "Turning point". It¹s going well so far, and I¹m currently looking into career options in this field - such as mental health nursing or occupational therapy. This was a direct result of volunteering so thank you for the inspiration!”

“Volunteering here has helped me to find work in a number of different ways. Firstly, being a volunteer helped to convince me of the kind of work I wanted to do, and gave me confidence in my abilities. Secondly, volunteering here has enabled me to develop my skills in working with groups. I have been given opportunities to lead activities and projects that I have worked on. This is helpful when contacting potential employers or applying for jobs, and I can show on my CV experience of working on a community project. My “people” skills have improved a great deal since becoming a volunteer and I am a more confident speaker, as well as more skilled in planning activities and running a session. Whilst volunteering I have also tried new art techniques, like willow sculpture, which as well as being fun has added extra skills and experience to my CV and helped me to be creative when planning art workshops.”

“I am on long term sick and on benefit. The way I look at it is that you cannot sit around and do nothing. Working as a volunteer suits me. Being a volunteer doesn't mean I am any less a person just because I don't get a wage. I meet good people here at Arc and when I leave in the evening to go home I have a great feeling of having done a good deed; a feeling of satisfaction at having helped a member or just plain talked to someone gives me great contentment. I get something out of it as well because I can keep up to date with my computer and office skills and meet with other volunteers and workers.”
